How to Open a Safaricom Paybill for Your Chama
A Safaricom Paybill number gives your chama professional payment collection. Here's the application process step by step.
A Paybill number transforms your chama's collection process. Instead of personal M-Pesa transfers (which mix personal and group funds), members send to a dedicated business number. Every payment is trackable, professional, and separable from the treasurer's personal account.
Requirements
- Registered business or Self-Help Group certificate
- KRA PIN certificate (group or individual official)
- National ID copies of signatories
- Business bank account (some cases)
- Safaricom application form
Application Process
- Visit a Safaricom Business Care centre
- Request a Paybill application form
- Submit with all supporting documents
- Pay the application fee (approximately KES 1,000-5,000)
- Wait for approval (1-4 weeks)
- Receive your Paybill number
Setting Up for Collections
Once active, share the Paybill number with members. Establish a standard account reference format (e.g., member's phone number or member ID) so you can identify who paid.
With API integration, payments can be automatically matched to members — no manual checking required.
